AI-POWERED CHATBOTS IN LANGUAGE LEARNING: OPPORTUNITIES, CHALLENGES, AND PEDAGOGICAL IMPLICATIONS
Abstract
Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered chatbots have rapidly emerged as transformative tools in language education, providing interactive, adaptive, and personalized learning environments. Advances in Natural Language Processing (NLP) and machine learning enable these systems to simulate human-like conversations and support real-time language practice. Recent studies indicate that AI chatbots significantly enhance language learning outcomes by offering continuous practice, immediate feedback, and low-anxiety environments that encourage communication. Meta-analytical evidence confirms their effectiveness in improving EFL learners’ speaking performance and overall achievement, while their use has also been linked to increased motivation and positive emotional engagement. However, challenges remain, including limitations in contextual understanding, occasional inaccuracies, and insufficient cultural and emotional awareness. Therefore, this article emphasizes the importance of integrating AI chatbots within a human-centered pedagogical framework where they complement rather than replace teachers, and highlights the need for further research on design, ethics, and long-term educational impact.
