THE TRANSFORMATION OF ENGLISH UNDER GLOBALIZATION: FROM NATIONAL LANGUAGE TO GLOBAL LINGUA FRANCA
Abstract
Globalization has contributed to the expansion and fast spread of the English language from a national to an international language. The article deals with the historical, social and linguistic factors that have led to English becoming the world's first language and with the consequences of such a wide use of English in different cultures. The article also examines the adaptation of English to local needs, the role of new technologies, and of mass media and international communication in the consolidation of English as a global lingua franca. The conclusion drawn is that while the use of English might enhance global exchange and access to knowledge, it also raises issues of linguistic diversity and cultural identity.
