THE IMPACT OF DEPRESSION ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
Abstract
This research investigates the nature of academic stress and its impact on students' cognitive functioning, motivation, and overall academic performance. A mixed-method approach was employed, combining a survey of approximately 60 undergraduate students and semi-structured interviews with five participants. The study found that when stress levels are high, students struggle significantly with maintaining attention, storing new information, and achieving satisfactory academic results. Approximately 70% of surveyed students reported experiencing moderate to severe stress that negatively affected their studies, while 30% indicated they could manage stress effectively through various coping strategies. The study emphasizes the need for educational institutions to implement structured stress management programs and foster supportive learning environments to help students sustain academic achievement.
